GLOBAL PEACE PROJECT

In September, our class took part in a global peace project for WORLD PEACE DAY.  The project was organised by Mr Ferguson's class.  They invited classes from around the world to make a short movie/video about what peace means to them.  It had to be ready before World Peace Day on September 21st.  The children in Mr Ferguson's class then took bits of all the movies and combined them to create one 4 minute movie.  We loved taking part in this project because we think it is important to share the message of PEACE!
Enjoy the movie and visit the website.  Maybe you could create your own message of peace!

OUR GRAPHIC NOVEL

This term we are taking part in the MONSTER PROJECT.  We are very busy constructing our monster for the project.  We are also busy learning about graphic novels and the features of them.  As a class we are making a graphic novel based on the book THERE WAS AN OLD MONSTER by Rebecca, Adrian and Ed Emberley.
We read the story first and then we split up into groups of 2 or 3 and we were given a page from the story.  We had to come up with our own drawing to go with that part of the story.  We then had to plan how we were going to add the text in .  We had to think about whether we would add word balloons, thought balloons, captions or sound effects.  We are going to create our graphic novel using COMIC LIFE.  We are then going to publish it as an ebook and put it on our school ipads for everyone to read.
Here are some pictures of us planning and working together to illustrate our part of the story.

OUR BOOK TRAILERS

For BOOK WEEK we made Book Trailers for the Children's Book Council of Australia short listed picture books.
To make our book trailers we firstly had to find out what a book trailer was, Mr S showed us some examples of book trailers.  We talked about the features of book trailers and which ones we liked the best.  We all decided that we really liked the ones that had music that went with them and the ones that weren't too long.
In class we read some of the short listed picture books.  With Mrs R we came up with our own criteria for what we thought we would need to include in our book trailers to make them a good book trailer and then we came up with features that would make them EXCEPTIONAL.
We worked with a partner and decided which picture book we would do.  We then planned our story board.  After that we spent class time working on our book trailers using Keynote and Garage Band to create our music.  We thought creating your own music would make it an EXCEPTIONAL book trailer, most of us did this but some decided to use other music.
After we had finished them we had to mark our own book trailers using the criteria sheet, then Mrs R marked them.
We worked really well with our partners and enjoyed completing this task.
Most of us chose the books MY UNCLE'S DONKEY, WHY I LOVE AUSTRALIA and MIRROR.
We hope you enjoy our Book Trailers.

I have made a page on our blog called OUR QUAD BLOGGING BUDDIES.  On this page it has a list of our buddies and by clicking on the school's name it will take you to their blog.
We are in QUAD 20.

Do you know why it is called QUAD BLOGGING?  Leave a comment if you have worked it out!

FRACTION MATHS TRAIL

In class we have been learning about fractions.  To help us understand these tricky things, Mrs R set up a Fraction Maths Trail.  She made a booklet that had 6 different stations or activities in it that we had to complete.  We worked with a partner in a group of 6.  We moved around to different activities to practice using fractions.  The activities were the pizza fraction game, a fraction activity sheet, playing fraction games on the ipad and laptops, make a whole game, basketball shootout and probably the most favourite activity.....Smarties Fractions.
We really enjoyed doing the activities and it was a great way to help us understand fractions.

RAW ART

Last Tuesday we were very lucky to have RAW ART come to our classroom to do some art with us.  We have been learning about different abstract artists in class and we have been trying to create work in the style of these artists.
With Leona from RAW ART we created our own animal abstract art pictures.
First we chose a colour and painted our piece of cardboard.  We then chose a pastel and started to draw the border and outline of our animal.  We then used different patterns and colours  to decorate our animals.  We smudged the lines and then added some interesting patterns for the background.
We all had a great time and created some amazing pieces of art, I think we surprised ourselves at how good they all look!

WE HAVE BEEN SO BUSY!!!

We have been very busy in year 3 over the past couple of weeks.  So busy infact that we haven't had time to blog about all the things we have done.

Our school choir took part in  the QCMF (Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival).  There were many catholic schools taking part in this festival and it wasn't just choirs singing, school bands performed as well.

Our choir did very well and was awarded a GOLD Award for their song, while our Year 7 choir was awarded a SILVER Award.

Our choir has been very busy because a week later they had to get to school by 7am so that they could sing on the radio.  ABC radio came out to our school so that the choir could sing.  The ABC are holding a competition for all school choirs.  You can listen to our choir by clicking on this link:

PAPER CHAIN INVESTIGATION

Last week we investigated the question "WHAT IS THE LONGEST PAPER CHAIN THAT CAN BE MADE USING AN A4 PIECE OF PAPER?"

First we made chains using plastic chain counters, then we had to record the maths that we would need to help us answer this question.  We said that some of the maths would be measurement, length, width, cm, m, horizontal, vertical.

Then we wrote down our plan - how we were going to make our paper chains.

We then made our chains and we were able to check their length against the 1m ruler.

After we made our chains we compared them to each others.

We then had to estimate how long our chain was and record this on the class chart.  We then measured our chains and recorded this on the chart.

Jack M and Rhys made the longest paper chains in the class.  Jack's chain was 4m and Rhys' was 4.05m.  We found out that to make a long paper chain you needed to cut thin strips and cut the paper both vertically and horizontally to get a mix of small and large links.

OUR CINQUAIN POEMS

We have learnt about a different kind of poem.  This one is also from Japan.  It is called a Cinquain Poem.  It is similar to a Haiku in that each line has a certain number of syllables but it is a bit trickier as you have to include certain types of words in each line.
Line 1 - 1 noun (2 syllables)
Line 2 - 2 adjectives (4 syllables)
Line 3 - 3 'ing' words (6 syllables)
Line 4 - phrase or a sentence (8 syllables)
Line 5 - 1 noun to rename 1st noun (2syllables)

Here are the two poems we came up with.  They are both about Myst.
Chamber
Scary, creepy
Searching, pressing, finding
Message from the turbulent pool.
Dungeon

                                                 Myst Book
              Dusty, mouldy

MYST HAIKU POEM

In class we learnt how to write haiku poems.  A haiku poem is from Japan and is usually written about something in nature.  It is 3 lines long.  The first line has to have 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables and the last line has 5 syllables.  They are very tricky to write because you have to think carefully about the words you will choose to make sure they have just the right number of syllables.
Here is the poem we wrote together in class

Myst Ocean
Water all around
Gently lapping on the rocks
Clapping and splashing.

Songs For Our Mass

Companions on the Journey
We are companions on the journey
Breaking bread and shring life
And in the love we bear is the hope we share
For we believe in the love of our God
We believe in the love of our God.

No longer stranger to each other
No longer strangers in God's house
We are fed and we are nourished
By the sstrength of those who care
By the strength of those who care.

We have gifted with each other
And we are called by the word of the lord
To act with justice to love tenderly
And to walk humbly with our God
To walk humbly with our God.

Glory and Praise To Our God
Chorus
Glory and praise to our God, who alone gives light to our days
Many are the blessings he bears to those who trust in his ways.

We, the daughters and sons of him who built the valleys and plains, praise the wonders our God has done in every heart that sings.

Chorus

In his wisdom he strengthens us, like gold that's tested in fire.  Though the power of sin prevails, our God is there to save.

Chorus

Every moment of every day, our God is waiting to save, always ready to seek the lost, to answer those who pray.

Chorus

Celebrate
Chorus
Celebrate what we have been given, celebrate what we have received.
Celebrate the spirit of Jesus, alive in our hearts.

No longer shall you be people who walk in darkness, it is the spirit who draws you in to the light.

Chorus

Even the earth cries out.  It longs to receive new life.  It is the spirit who fills the world with new life.

Chorus

You who are gather'd here share life and love together.  It is the spirit who calls you our to give.

Chorus

3j Silent Reading

In our class we do silent reading. In silent reading we have a book in our desk when Mrs R says it is silent reading time we get the book out or if we don't have a book in our desk we go to the book shelf and get a book off the shelf and go back to our desk and we read silently for 10 minutes. That is what we do in silent reading.
