FRACTION MATHS TRAIL

In class we have been learning about fractions.  To help us understand these tricky things, Mrs R set up a Fraction Maths Trail.  She made a booklet that had 6 different stations or activities in it that we had to complete.  We worked with a partner in a group of 6.  We moved around to different activities to practice using fractions.  The activities were the pizza fraction game, a fraction activity sheet, playing fraction games on the ipad and laptops, make a whole game, basketball shootout and probably the most favourite activity.....Smarties Fractions.
We really enjoyed doing the activities and it was a great way to help us understand fractions.

RAW ART

Last Tuesday we were very lucky to have RAW ART come to our classroom to do some art with us.  We have been learning about different abstract artists in class and we have been trying to create work in the style of these artists.
With Leona from RAW ART we created our own animal abstract art pictures.
First we chose a colour and painted our piece of cardboard.  We then chose a pastel and started to draw the border and outline of our animal.  We then used different patterns and colours  to decorate our animals.  We smudged the lines and then added some interesting patterns for the background.
We all had a great time and created some amazing pieces of art, I think we surprised ourselves at how good they all look!

WE HAVE BEEN SO BUSY!!!

We have been very busy in year 3 over the past couple of weeks.  So busy infact that we haven't had time to blog about all the things we have done.

Our school choir took part in  the QCMF (Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival).  There were many catholic schools taking part in this festival and it wasn't just choirs singing, school bands performed as well.

Our choir did very well and was awarded a GOLD Award for their song, while our Year 7 choir was awarded a SILVER Award.

Our choir has been very busy because a week later they had to get to school by 7am so that they could sing on the radio.  ABC radio came out to our school so that the choir could sing.  The ABC are holding a competition for all school choirs.  You can listen to our choir by clicking on this link:

PAPER CHAIN INVESTIGATION

Last week we investigated the question "WHAT IS THE LONGEST PAPER CHAIN THAT CAN BE MADE USING AN A4 PIECE OF PAPER?"

First we made chains using plastic chain counters, then we had to record the maths that we would need to help us answer this question.  We said that some of the maths would be measurement, length, width, cm, m, horizontal, vertical.

Then we wrote down our plan - how we were going to make our paper chains.

We then made our chains and we were able to check their length against the 1m ruler.

After we made our chains we compared them to each others.

We then had to estimate how long our chain was and record this on the class chart.  We then measured our chains and recorded this on the chart.

Jack M and Rhys made the longest paper chains in the class.  Jack's chain was 4m and Rhys' was 4.05m.  We found out that to make a long paper chain you needed to cut thin strips and cut the paper both vertically and horizontally to get a mix of small and large links.

SJV FEAST DAY AND WALKATHON

On the 4th August we celebrated St John Vianney's Feast Day and our School Walkathon.
We started the day with a school mass to celebrate Saint John Vianney's Feast Day.  After mass we lined up in our class groups and started our very long walkathon.  We walked 4.9km.  We walked down to the waterfront, then we stopped in a park and got into a big circle and did the Hokey Pokey.  After that we walked along the water front to the new Lota Park.  When we got to the park we had some fruit for morning tea.  After we had some fruit we walked up a very steep hill back to school.  When we got back to school we had a special lunch.  Some people had popcorn chicken, cheese burgers, sushi or nachos.  After lunch we got into our groups and played some fun activities.  The activities were "Babies to teacher", "Ping Pong Ball Bounce", "cupcake decorating", "gravity game", "obstacle course" and "skipping statues".
After all the activities we sang "Happy Feast Day To Us", Mrs S cut the massive Feast Day Cake and we all got a piece of cake and an iceblock.
We had a fantastic day!!!
